Through consultations with you and your physician, we will provide you with the best medical care in the tri-state area. Every member of our team knows that your condition may be a serious matter that could have a profound effect on you and your family. At Lenox Hill Heart and Vascular Institute, our thoracic surgeons take special care to fully discuss your condition, treatment options, and prognosis fully, honestly, and with the respect that you and your family deserve.

One of our many specialty focus areas is lung cancer. We combine a highly skilled, multidisciplinary team with state-of-the-art facilities to offer a comprehensive course of treatment for lung cancer. Before we can decide on the best approach, we work with you to determine the stage of your cancer. Staging uses a variety of tests to see if the cancer has spread beyond your lungs. Tests may include computed tomography (CT) scans, ultrasounds, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and bone scans.

In addition to traditional surgical procedures, we are leaders in minimally invasive therapies for patients who may not be candidates for surgery or patients who seek to avoid traditional surgery. Most of the procedures we perform are minimally invasive. Minimally invasive and newer robotic procedures offer similar benefits to more traditional methods usually with shorter hospital time, quicker recovery times, less blood loss, and less pain than traditional surgery. We have been designated as the northeast robotic thoracic surgical epicenter of excellence. Surgeons from around the world come to be trained by our thoracic physicians.

Leaders in groundbreaking technology, our thoracic surgeons are highly skilled at newer procedures, such as robotically assisted surgery and video-assisted thorascopic surgery (VATS), to treat chest disorders. Like robotic surgery, VATS uses advanced video technology inserted through small incisions. This technology allows the surgeon to see the interior of the chest without the need for large incisions. Skilled experts at performing VATS, the Lenox Hill Heart and Vascular Institute use this innovative technology to obtain tissue for biopsy and to perform surgery.

Our robotic approach to treatment represents an enabling technology that allows the surgeon to do what they currently do better. Robotic surgery extends the surgeon's ability to perform more complex procedures than were thought to be un-doable through a minimally invasive approach. With robotic procedures, your surgeon only makes small incision, resulting in less scaring. Robotic surgery also lets your surgeon see inside your body in minute detail through tiny cameras inserted through incisions. Some of our more advanced robotic procedures include:

  • Esophagectomy
  • Laparoscopic Heller myotomy
  • Laparaoscopic repair of paraesophageal hernia
  • Lobectomy
  • Pneumonectomy
  • Thymectomy
  • Other lesser procedures such as intra-thoracic biopsies and pleural surgery

Our skills and expertise show in part through our robotically assisted surgery training program. By training other surgeons in robotic technologies, we are harvesting a new crop of specialists who will see that you receive the safest, most minimally invasive treatments available for lung cancer and other chest diseases and disorders. In addition to training surgeons, we lead and take part in research initiatives to further the advancement of thoracic medicine. For example, we are currently studying the validation of the immune response to the stress of surgery.
