About Dr. Patel
Dr. Nirav Patel was born in Baroda, Gujarat, India where he completed his medical school from Maharaja Sayajirao University. He then completed his general surgery training in BYL Nair hospital and TN Medical College in Bombay. Simultaneously he achieved Master of Surgery qualification from the Bombay University.
In 1995 he moved to United Kingdom where he started his training in cardiothoracic surgery at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. He completed a comprehensive six year training program in all aspects of Cardiothoracic Surgery as a Specialist Registrar in Liverpool and Manchester University Hospitals. He also achieved fellowships at the Royal college of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Intercollegiate speciality board in Cardiothoraic Surgery. He was then appointed a a Minimally Invasive Fellow in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery division at the Lenox Hill Hospital before being appointed as an attending cardiac surgeon.
Dr. Patel was part of initial development of beating heart coronary grafting in the UK and has presented in international meetings and published several important articles in peer-reviewed journals on clinical results of beating heart surgery. He continues to do clinical and basic science research at Lenox Hill Hospital. His special interests include beating heart coronary surgery, mitral reconstruction, aortic surgery, and managing cardiac surgical databases to evaluate outcomes and quality improvement.
